New requirements for language exams for foreigners in Poland
Starting from July 1, 2025, foreigners residing in Poland must have official confirmation of their knowledge of the Polish language. A certificate of passing the state exam or the TELC exam is now mandatory for obtaining citizenship, a long-term EU resident card, and applying to police schools. Experts from the Polish Linguistic Institute have shared insights about these exams and how to prepare for them effectively.
There are two main exam formats: the state exam and the international TELC exam. The state exam consists of five modules and lasts for two days. It must be passed to obtain citizenship and an EU resident card. As for TELC, this exam can be taken more frequently and is suitable for university admissions and acquiring an EU resident card.
Preparation for exams, tests
The state exam places a major focus on grammar, while TELC includes a module called 'Language Elements', which is easier. The oral part's features vary in format - for the state exam, it is conducted individually, while in TELC, it is done in pairs with another candidate.
To successfully pass these exams, proper preparation is essential. Monika Sembida emphasizes that passing the exam without preparation will be challenging, as candidates need a clear structure and are under stress. It is recommended to attend preparatory courses and take the online test from the Polish Linguistic Institute.
