Starting January 1, 2024, all Ukrainian cars in the Czech Republic are subject to mandatory registration. This applies even to vehicles used by Ukrainians with temporary protection status (ZDP) or a tolerance visa. In case of violation, a fine of up to 30,000 crowns is foreseen. This is reported by the publication Visit Ukraine.

Why you need to register a car in the Czech Republic

The ministry emphasizes that driving a car without registration while being under the temporary protection program is prohibited. Newly arrived Ukrainians have 7 days from the moment they receive ZDP status to register their vehicle.
At the same time, changing Ukrainian license plates is not necessary — after successful registration, they can continue to be used.

Registration allows Czech authorities to control the number of foreign cars, check tax and fine payments, and ensures the accuracy of the owner's residence data. The police have the right to impose a fine directly during the inspection if the car is not registered.

How to register a car in the Czech Republic

For vehicle registration in the Czech Republic, it is necessary to submit the following documents to local transport authorities:

  • driver's identification;

  • power of attorney with notarized confirmation (if a representative acts);

  • Ukrainian registration certificate or technical passport;

  • completed registration application (form is provided on-site or available online).

More detailed information can be found on the special transport portal of the Czech Republic.

Fines and insurance

Ignoring the registration requirement is considered an administrative offense and is punishable by a fine of up to 30,000 crowns. Drivers are also reminded of the mandatory presence of an international insurance policy "Green Card" which covers damages caused to third parties in case of an accident. It can be purchased both in Ukraine and in the Czech Republic, but it is usually cheaper to arrange online before departure.

The introduction of mandatory registration of Ukrainian cars is part of measures aimed at regulating the presence of foreign transport in the Czech Republic. The new rules are intended to enhance the transparency of road control and protect drivers from administrative issues.
