What's Actually Correct: ESOZ, YeSOZ, or eHealth?
Ukraine's digital health sphere comes with its own set of confusing abbreviations, and one spelling mistake has become especially widespread. This article explains the key differences. ESOZ is the only correct spelling for the electronic healthcare system. Writing it as YeSOZ is incorrect. By contrast, eHealth refers to a broader digital ecosystem that includes ESOZ as well as other electronic solutions.
What ESOZ Does and Where It Fits
ESOZ is the Ukrainian acronym for the electronic healthcare system. It handles data on patients, medical staff, and healthcare institutions. It also makes electronic prescriptions and electronic referrals work. The extra letter "Ye" in YeSOZ is redundant — in fact, YeSOZ is not a valid name at all.
It is easy to confuse ESOZ with eHealth, but the two are not the same. eHealth is the full ecosystem of digital healthcare, containing many electronic tools and services. ESOZ is one of the core systems within that ecosystem.
Other examples of digital health tools in this space include:
- The e-queue for joint replacement surgery
- The e-system for rating-based residency placement
- MedData
- The e-notification system for cosmetic products
Getting these terms right matters for anyone using digital health services. When doctors, patients, and administrators use the same clear terminology, communication becomes smoother and mistakes are less likely. A consistent vocabulary can also support the future growth of e-health services in Ukraine.
