It is not uncommon for shoppers to find that the price scanned at the register is higher than the one shown on the shelf label. In such cases, consumers are legally entitled to purchase the item for the amount displayed on the tag. The law treats a shelf price tag as a public offer to sell under those terms, meaning the store—not the customer—bears responsibility for any pricing errors.

Steps for Consumers to Follow

If a seller refuses to honor the listed price, customers are advised to take the following actions:

  • Take a photo of the product alongside the price tag to document the discrepancy.
  • Speak with the store manager or shift supervisor, who may be able to resolve the issue on the spot.

Should the store fail to address the complaint, the consumer can record the incident in the store’s feedback and suggestions book, noting the establishment’s name and address. If the matter remains unresolved, a formal complaint can be filed with the regional headquarters of the State Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection. This agency oversees the enforcement of buyer rights, making it essential for consumers to understand their entitlements and the proper course of action in such situations.

Price mismatches on merchandise can create significant inconvenience, but it is crucial to remember that you have rights. Knowing how to respond when a conflict arises with a retailer can not only resolve the immediate problem but also raise awareness about consumer protection in Ukraine.
