Ukrainian Players Expected in NHL Draft Within Five Years

Спортсмени з України готові підкорювати НХЛ в найближчі роки.

Outlook for Ukrainian Hockey Prospects in the NHL Draft

Oleksandr Hodyniuk, Vice President of the Ice Hockey Federation of Ukraine (FHU) and a scout for the NHL's Vegas Golden Knights, has shared an upbeat forecast: Ukrainian athletes are likely to be selected in the NHL Draft over the next half-decade. He stated,

“In my view, within roughly five years, Ukrainians will definitely appear in the NHL Draft.”
He added that after Cholach—the last Ukrainian picked by an NHL team in 2021—the gap won't be as long this time, and one or more Ukrainians could soon be drafted. This optimism reflects growing recognition of Ukrainian hockey talent on a global stage.

The most recent Ukrainian player to earn an NHL opportunity was Cholach, selected 190th overall by Vegas. He was the first Ukrainian drafted by an NHL club since 2007, signaling a gradual resurgence of interest in Ukrainian players internationally.

State of Hockey in Ukraine and International Success

Meanwhile, the hockey world is buzzing as the Stanley Cup semifinalists have been confirmed. The four teams advancing are:

  • Montreal Canadiens
  • Carolina Hurricanes
  • Vegas Golden Knights
  • Colorado Avalanche

The first semifinal game, between the Colorado Avalanche and Vegas Golden Knights, is scheduled for May 21, 2026. The reigning Stanley Cup champions, the Florida Panthers, failed to qualify for the 2026 playoffs.

On the international stage, Ukrainian hockey players continue to excel. Danylo Trakht was named the top forward at the 2026 World Championship Division IA, recording 8 points (4 goals and 4 assists) in 5 games. Additionally, six Ukrainians ranked among the top 30 in scoring, and Ihor Merezhko was recognized as the tournament's best defenseman. These achievements highlight the rising caliber of Ukrainian hockey and its promising future worldwide.

Given Hodyniuk's positive predictions, there is a clear uptick in attention toward Ukrainian players, which may indicate improving conditions for hockey development in Ukraine. At the same time, international successes—like Trakht's standout performance—bolster hopes for continued progress among Ukrainian athletes in this sport.

As the excitement builds for the upcoming NHL Draft, the spotlight on Ukrainian talent is brighter than ever. Recent performances, particularly at international competitions, have positioned Ukrainian players as strong contenders. For instance, two young Ukrainian ice hockey players are anticipated to make a significant impact in the 2026 NHL Draft, further emphasizing the potential growth of Ukrainian representation in the league.
