New Anti-Spam Call Rules Take Effect in Ukraine
Mobile operators in Ukraine introduced new rules in October 2023 to protect consumers from intrusive marketing calls. In the first three months, these measures led to the blocking of 59,071 numbers identified as sources of spam. This initiative aims to enhance the quality of communications for users, addressing a common nuisance in many countries.
Under the new regulations, a number flagged for spam cannot be called back, which significantly hinders repeat contact from such callers. Analysis shows that calls from a large portion of these spam numbers last an average of less than 60 seconds. Furthermore, calls that result in an actual conversation account for less than 5% of the total traffic from these numbers, indicating their low effectiveness for genuine communication.
How to Check if a Number is Spam
Consumers who wish to verify whether a number is associated with spam have several options:
- Contact their mobile service provider directly.
- Kyivstar subscribers can call 466 or use the 'My Kyivstar' app.
- Vodafone users can call 111 or use the My Vodafone application.
- Lifecell customers can call 5433 or use the 'My lifecell' app.
Additional avenues are also available. Individuals can seek state support by calling the hotline at 1545 or submit a formal complaint via a form on the website of the National Commission for State Regulation of Communications and Informatization (NKRZI). This multi-pronged approach is designed to improve the overall communication environment in Ukraine.
The implementation of these new rules marks a significant step in protecting consumer rights. With the increasing volume of unwanted calls globally, such measures can substantially improve the quality of daily communication and reduce the psychological burden of constant unsolicited offers. Initiatives like this also help build public trust in both mobile operators and the regulatory bodies overseeing these issues.
