A milestone for Roman Martsun
Roman Martsun, an athlete from the Slavske community in the Lviv region, completed a stunning one-day sweep of all six highest peaks in the Ukrainian Carpathians. The Carpathian mountains stretch across western Ukraine and are a major hub for hiking and climbing. The record route, which included summits above 2,000 meters, took him 13 hours, 27 minutes, and 31 seconds. Here are the peaks he conquered:

Martsun traveled over 60 kilometers along the Chornohora ridge with no outside assistance, hauling a roughly 20-kilogram backpack that held a tent and all essential gear. His average moving speed was 4.5 kilometers per hour. This undertaking serves as a key stepping stone in his preparation to climb all 14 eight-thousanders, an objective that ranks among the most ambitious challenges in mountaineering.
Everest’s height and the hurdles to climb it
It’s worth remembering that Mount Everest in the Himalayas is deemed the highest point on Earth, yet more than half of its elevation is actually the result of the raised Tibetan plateau. Depending on which slope is measured, the mountain’s true height from base to summit ranges from 3,650 to 4,650 meters. Under planned new rules, climbing permits for Everest will only be granted to applicants who have already scaled at least one non-Nepalese peak higher than 7,000 meters.
Given these demands, Martsun’s Carpathian record stands out as a clear sign of both stamina and readiness for higher-altitude challenges.
