Restoration of Ukraine's Energy System
Ukraine needs about two months to restore the energy system after the end of attacks on the energy infrastructure. During the three months of autumn, 8,000 megawatts of generation were damaged, half of which has already been restored by December. However, the situation remains complicated due to ongoing attacks.
As of December 26, nine mass strikes have been recorded, occurring every 10-15 days. In total, over 2,000 strikes on the energy networks and about 440 strikes on energy facilities have been recorded during this period. On average, Russian forces inflict about 60 strikes on transformers every month. This seriously complicates the restoration of the energy infrastructure.
Electricity Supply Situation
On December 28, electricity supply schedules for household consumers are in effect in Ukraine. After the attack on December 27, more than 500,000 consumers were left without power in Kyiv and the Kyiv region. Experts, including Artem Nekrasov, state that if the strikes stop, it will take about two months to restore the energy system. He also pointed out that Russia attacks not only power plants but also power grids, substations, and gas extraction infrastructure.
The restoration of energy infrastructure is critically important to ensure the stability of electricity supply in Ukraine, especially during the winter period.
