A 100-Year-Old Ukrainian Woman Reveals Her Secret to a Long Life

Секрет довголіття: поради столітньої українки про здоров’я та щастя.

Marfa Naumenko’s Centennial Celebration

Marfa Naumenko, a resident of the Snovsk community in the Chernihiv region, recently celebrated her 100th birthday. Born in the village of Tykhonovychi, she raised three children and spent her entire career working on a collective farm, tending to sheep and calves. On her special day, she shared the key to her longevity: staying constantly active.

Naumenko is a grandmother to seven, a great-grandmother to seven, and a great-great-grandmother to three. Her husband passed away in 2006, and she lived alone in Yen'kova Rudnya until the fall of 2025. She now resides under the care of her daughter in the village of Snovske. According to the Snovsk City Council, the centenarian impresses everyone with her cheerful spirit. She remains sharp-minded and in good health, though she has some hearing loss.

“It’s hard to believe, but just a few years ago this incredible woman was still sewing on her own sewing machine, and even now she goes out to check on the garden and feed the chickens,” council representatives added.

The Secrets to a Long Life

Marfa Potapivna also stays informed about national events. Despite her advanced age, her heart aches for her native Ukraine, and she is fully aware that the country is at war.

“Her greatest wish for all of us is that it ends as soon as possible with a victory!” the Snovsk City Council noted.

For context, last year another centenarian, Nell Hines, celebrated her 109th birthday and has 55 great-grandchildren. Her longevity tips also sparked discussion, reinforcing the idea that an active lifestyle may contribute to a long life.

Celebrating milestones like Marfa Naumenko’s 100th birthday highlights how staying active and maintaining a positive outlook can serve as an inspiration for younger generations. These events also shed light on the social and economic challenges faced by the elderly, especially during times of crisis. Providing care and support for older adults is essential to ensuring their well-being and dignity in later years.

As we celebrate Marfa Naumenko’s remarkable milestone, it’s worth noting that longevity often runs in families. For instance, another inspiring story emerged last year when a woman born in 1916 reached the impressive age of 109. Her experiences and insights into a long life provide valuable perspectives on maintaining vitality and purpose.
