Border Incident

On July 2, 2026, at the Medyka-Shehyni border crossing, Polish border guards detained a Ukrainian woman attempting to leave Poland with a passport containing six forged border control stamps. The counterfeit stamps, purportedly from Slovak border authorities, were intended to make it appear she had legally crossed borders, thereby supporting her efforts to legitimize an overstayed visit in Germany. This case highlights ongoing challenges in detecting document fraud at European borders.

During document inspection, officers grew suspicious of the stamps' authenticity and consulted their Slovak counterparts. Verification confirmed all six stamps were fake. The woman was questioned as a witness and denied knowingly using forged documents. Following procedural steps, case materials will be forwarded to court, and she was permitted to depart for Ukraine.

Document Forgery Concerns

Since the start of 2026, staff of the Bieszczady Border Guard Division have uncovered over 2,100 forged or altered documents, including more than 40 counterfeit stamps. This incident underscores the critical need for rigorous border document checks and anti-forgery efforts.

The case illustrates a growing problem of document fraud in border zones, posing serious challenges to migration control and security. Strengthened inspection measures and cross-border cooperation on sharing data about fake documents could help prevent similar cases. For the Ukrainian woman, the prospect of legal proceedings remains, as document forgery cases can carry severe consequences even when the accused claims unawareness.

This recent incident is not isolated, as evidenced by another case involving a Ukrainian woman who faced significant penalties in Poland due to a forged medical certificate. Such incidents reveal a troubling trend in document forgery that authorities are increasingly confronting.
