Blogger Sparks Outrage Over Ukrainian Passport Disposal
In Poland, Ukrainian-born blogger Anastasiia Vernikovska threw her Ukrainian passport into a garbage bin, an act triggered by growing tensions between Poland and Ukraine. The conflict escalated after Polish President Karol Nawrocki revoked Volodymyr Zelenskyy's Order of the White Eagle on June 19, following Ukraine's decision to honor a military unit with the name 'Heroes of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA).' The next day, Zelenskyy mailed the award back to Nawrocki, and it was placed in permanent storage at Poland's Office of Awards and Appointments, according to spokesman Rafał Leskiewicz.
Vernikovska, who has lived in Poland for a decade, expressed deep frustration with the Ukrainian president's actions. She stated:
“This is about the situation between this country and Poland! Mentally, I am Polish, even though I have mixed blood. I am ashamed of the leadership of our neighbors! You cannot behave this way. Considering the past and all the help they have received and continue to receive, doing such things is a disgrace and a shame!” — Anastasiia Vernikovska
Her decision sparked mixed reactions online, with some users filing complaints against her with the Security Service of Ukraine.
On social media, users weighed in on Vernikovska's actions. Comments included:
- “That passport has been paid for with blood, pain, and loss. Seeing it devalued like this hurts me deeply.”
- “Don’t worry, she’ll quickly pull that Ukrainian passport back out of the bag… It’s all for the hype.”
- “Good thing the internet never forgets.”
Responding to backlash, Vernikovska clarified her stance: “Now Ukrainians will tear me apart and say I’m just trying to please Poles. This isn’t about currying favor — it’s about respecting history. And he (Volodymyr Zelenskyy) shows no respect for either the distant past or the recent one. Poland has given so much help, and now you, my friend, have caused trouble — lower your head, apologize, return the award you were given, and that’s it.”
Debate Continues to Unfold
The controversy surrounding Anastasiia Vernikovska's actions remains a hot topic of discussion in both Ukraine and Poland, drawing a wide range of reactions across social media platforms.
This incident highlights the strained relations between Ukraine and Poland, particularly around historical monuments and national symbols. Vernikovska's act raises questions about identity and national pride, which can become vulnerable amid political disputes. The varied responses online reflect the deep emotions tied to history and the modern challenges both countries face.
The ongoing tensions between Ukraine and Poland have not only sparked public protests but also prompted discussions about cultural recognition. In light of the recent controversies surrounding presidential awards, there are proposals to rename a metro station in Kyiv, reflecting the evolving relationship between the two nations. This situation underscores the complexities of national identity and historical grievances that continue to shape public sentiment.
