Humanitarian Operation in Oleshky
On October 30, a Ukrainian delegation arrived in Oleshky, a town temporarily under occupation in the Kherson region, to carry out a humanitarian evacuation. Residents are being evacuated via a route passing through Russia’s Anapa and Belarus, before returning to Ukrainian-controlled territory. The operation involves 25 buses with a total capacity of 750 seats, special vehicles for people with limited mobility, and nine ambulances. The evacuation corridor has been cleared of mines, and an 80-hour ceasefire was in place when the delegation arrived.
Evacuation Route and Logistics
Due to the frontline's proximity and mined areas near the river, evacuation by water is impossible, making the route through Russia and Belarus necessary for safety reasons. Residents have the option to travel either to areas controlled by Ukraine or to Russia. David Arakhamia, head of the 'Servant of the People' parliamentary faction and a member of the negotiation team, announced the start of the evacuation route.
On the same day, October 30, Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets confirmed the preparation of the humanitarian convoy, including the buses, specialized transport for those with mobility challenges, and ambulances. The convoy was ready to depart on that day, marking a critical step in the evacuation process.
Security conditions remain tense despite the ceasefire, which lasted 80 hours, and the completion of route demining. The area continues to pose risks due to remaining mines, requiring ongoing caution throughout the mission.
This evacuation effort represents a crucial move to safeguard the residents of Oleshky, who have endured difficult circumstances due to ongoing military conflict. The involvement of Ukrainian authorities highlights the government's commitment to protecting its citizens even in temporarily occupied regions. Such humanitarian missions may serve as valuable precedents for improving conditions in other conflict-affected areas of Ukraine.
The evacuation of residents from Oleshky is part of a broader effort to address the humanitarian needs in the region. Recently, nearly 4 tons of humanitarian aid were delivered by Ukrainian drones to the occupied town, underscoring the ongoing commitment to support those affected by the conflict.
