Introducing Ukrainian Language into the UK School Curriculum

From 2028, Ukrainian will be officially added to the British secondary school curriculum. The UK Department for Education has announced plans to introduce a GCSE exam in Ukrainian, enabling students of Ukrainian heritage to obtain a recognized British qualification while validating their native language skills. Teaching under this new curriculum will begin in September 2028 across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, with the inaugural exams scheduled for 2029.

This initiative is the culmination of years of advocacy by the Ukrainian community in the UK alongside sustained diplomatic efforts. Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Ukraine's Ambassador to the United Kingdom, expressed gratitude to the UK government, the Department for Education, Ukraine’s Ministry of Education and Science, and experts from both nations for their collaboration.

The Importance of This New Subject for Ukrainian Students

Inna Hryhorovych, head of the Ukrainian School of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, highlighted that the ongoing war has forced thousands of children to leave Ukraine. For these students, the new GCSE Ukrainian course offers a vital opportunity to continue their education abroad while preserving their cultural identity. She also pointed out that some Ukrainian students had previously been offered exams in Russian, underscoring the significance of having a dedicated Ukrainian language qualification. The introduction of this GCSE is a key step in supporting Ukrainian pupils living in the UK.

The integration of Ukrainian language studies into the UK education system responds to the growing needs of the Ukrainian diaspora amid war and migration. It not only helps maintain the cultural roots of Ukrainian children but also provides them with equal access to internationally recognized qualifications. Moreover, this new subject could play a crucial role in the social integration of Ukrainian students within British society, fostering stronger ties between the two countries and encouraging cultural exchange.

The introduction of the GCSE in Ukrainian is not only a significant milestone for the Ukrainian community but also reflects broader educational reforms in the UK. This development aligns with similar initiatives aimed at promoting multilingualism and cultural diversity within the British education system.
