Ukrainian Women Shine at the French Open

Ukraine’s Oleksandra Oliinykova secured a hard-fought win in the second round of the French Open, defeating Australia’s Kimberly Birrell 6:3, 0:6, 7:6. After breaking Birrell’s serve in the fourth game of the opening set, Oliinykova took control early. However, Birrell stormed back in the second set, shutting out her opponent completely.

The decisive third set was a tense battle. With the score tied 5-5 in the tiebreak, Oliinykova found her composure and dominated the remainder, winning the tiebreak 10-5 to punch her ticket to the next round.

  • Elina Svitolina, another Ukrainian contender, also made her mark at Roland Garros by advancing to the third round. She defeated Spain’s Kaitlin Quevedo, delivering a dominant first set where she bageled her opponent.
  • Unfortunately, Daria Snigur’s run came to an end in the second round. She was eliminated by American Peyton Stearns in straight sets.

Of the three Ukrainian women competing at this year’s French Open, two remain in the draw while one has exited the tournament.
