Ukrainian tennis player on Kichenok's controversial celebration: 'I am ashamed to have such colleagues'

Український тенісист висловив обурення через вчинок Кіченок: Мені соромно, що в нашій команді є такі колеги.

Alexandra Oliynikova's outrage over New Year's celebration

Ukrainian tennis player Alexandra Oliynikova expressed her outrage over the New Year's celebration by Nadiya Kichenok together with former Russian tennis players. In her comment, Oliynikova emphasized the importance of national representation for athletes in times of war, stating that such actions are unacceptable.

Ties with Russia

Kichenok celebrated the New Year with tennis players who have ties to Russia, including:

  • Yulia Putintseva
  • Daria Kasatkina
  • Anna Danilina
  • Aleksandra Krunic
  • Natalia Zabiyako

Oliynikova, who ranks 96th in the WTA rankings, noted that participation in propaganda events violates the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee regarding neutral athletes.

Additionally, in November 2023, Putintseva participated in the propaganda 'North Palmyra Tournament' in Russia, which was sponsored by 'Gazprom'. This, according to Oliynikova, is the 'apogee of cynicism', and she expressed her shame towards colleagues who support such ties.

Oliynikova called for greater awareness among athletes and emphasized the role of sports in shaping national identity, especially in difficult times.

This situation highlights the tension in the sports environment, particularly in the context of the war in Ukraine and relations with athletes from Russia. The importance of national identity and supporting colleagues during difficult times becomes a key issue for Ukrainian athletes who seek to maintain unity and patriotism in their activities. As a representative of Ukraine on the international stage, Oliynikova calls for responsibility and awareness in choosing partners and colleagues, which can significantly impact the nation's image.
