Ukrainian tennis player Oleksandra Oliynykova refused to shake hands with Hungary's Anna Bondar following their match at a WTA 250 tournament in Romania. Oliynykova's decision was a direct protest against Bondar's participation in a Russian tournament in December 2022, an event partly financed by the state-owned energy giant Gazprom. Oliynykova secured her first WTA 250 quarterfinal berth with a 6:4, 6:4 victory over Bondar.
Prior to the match, Oliynykova had publicly stated she would not partake in the customary post-match photo or handshake. In comments afterward, she condemned participation in Russian tournaments as morally unacceptable, drawing a parallel to athletes competing in Nazi Germany. Oliynykova framed the issue as one of basic humanity and values, urging the global tennis community not to ignore it. This incident reflects the deep political divisions that have entered international sports since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Hungarian Foreign Minister's Response
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó responded to the incident, stating that attempts to discredit Anna Bondar and the use of Nazi comparisons were most revealing of the Ukrainian athlete herself. He argued that mixing malicious political intent with sports inevitably creates problems.
Oliynykova expressed a willingness to shake Bondar's hand in the future, but only if the Hungarian player publicly acknowledges her mistake, apologizes to the Ukrainian people, and condemns Russian aggression. The dispute highlights how sport has become an arena for geopolitical expression, forcing athletes and officials to navigate complex ethical and political landscapes.
