Ukrainian Basketball Celebrates Success on Two Fronts
Ukrainian athletes have secured notable wins this week, with the women's game seeing action in the prestigious NCAA league and the men's national team advancing in the 2027 FIBA World Cup qualifiers. These results highlight the growing depth of talent emerging from Ukraine's basketball programs.
Four Ukrainian players featured in NCAA women's games. The LSU Tigers secured a convincing 103:63 victory over Alabama. Kateryna Koval played for 14 minutes, contributing 8 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals, and 3 blocks, with just 1 turnover.
In another match, Louisville defeated the California Golden Bears 71:59. Ukrainian player Yevheniia Putra saw 2 minutes of action, grabbing 1 rebound but also recording 1 turnover and 1 foul. Ohio State triumphed over the Nebraska Cornhuskers with a score of 90:71. Dasha Biriuk, playing for 2 minutes, missed one two-point shot and had 1 turnover. Men's National Team on a Roll
The Ukrainian men's national basketball team has successfully navigated its first two matches in the 2027 FIBA World Cup qualification. After these games, the team sits among the top two in its group. Ukraine defeated Denmark with a score of 88:71. Oleksandr Kovliar was the top scorer of that match, putting up 31 points in 37 minutes of play. Oleksandr Lypovyi added 13 points, while Viacheslav Bobrov achieved a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds.
In its first qualifying match, the national team also secured a win over Georgia, finishing 92:79. Kovliar was again the leader, scoring 31 points, along with 6 rebounds and 6 assists.
