Drone Assault Targets Afipsky Refinery
In the early hours of November 6, a coordinated attack involving Ukrainian drones and jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicles struck the Afipsky oil refinery located in Russia's Krasnodar region. The strike ignited a significant blaze visible from the outskirts of the city of Krasnodar. The assault persisted until dawn, with fresh waves of drones continuing their incursions after 7 a.m. Residents reported hearing explosions accompanied by active air defense measures.
Thick smoke from the resulting fire spread across the vicinity of Krasnodar. The refinery sits in the settlement of Afipsky within the Seversky district, roughly 20 kilometers southwest of Krasnodar city. According to the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the Afipsky refinery’s capacity is estimated at 6.25 million tons of crude oil annually, accounting for approximately 2.1% of Russia’s total refining output. After recent upgrades, its processing volume increased to about 9.1 million tons per year.
Products and Strategic Importance of the Refinery
The Afipsky refinery manufactures a range of petroleum products, including:
- Automotive gasoline
- Diesel fuel
- Aviation kerosene
- Vacuum gas oil
- Technical sulfur
Diesel and aviation kerosene are particularly critical, as they supply military vehicles and aircraft. The refinery serves both Russia’s domestic fuel market and exports abroad. This facility has been repeatedly targeted by Ukrainian drone strikes. In June, the Ukrainian General Staff confirmed damage to the refinery, and on July 14, another fire broke out following a subsequent attack.
The full extent of damages from the November 6 assault remains unclear. Analysts await satellite imagery to assess the impact on the refinery’s infrastructure. A local resident, Exilenova+, remarked,
“Afipsky is burning while locals still jump at the sound of a moped.”
This strike is part of an ongoing Ukrainian campaign aimed at crippling Russia’s critical infrastructure, which supports its military operations. Given Afipsky’s role as a key fuel supplier for Russian armed forces, it has emerged as a strategic target in the wider conflict between Ukraine and Russia. The repeated attacks suggest a deliberate strategy by Ukraine to degrade the enemy’s fuel resources, potentially influencing the dynamics of combat in the region.
