Ukrainian Drones Now Reach the Urals: A Quarter of Russia Is Within Striking Range

Безпілотники України здатні вражати мету далеко на Сході: нові можливості для оборони.

Expanding the Reach of Ukrainian Drone Operations

Advanced Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles have significantly extended their operational range, now capable of striking deep into Russian territory as far as the Ural Mountains. This development puts roughly one-quarter of Russia's land area—home to over 70% of its population—within reach. On April 25, drones hit Yekaterinburg for the first time since the full-scale invasion began, a city located nearly 1,700 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. Most attacks focus on economic infrastructure, such as oil refineries and military airbases.

Ukrainian drones regularly engage targets more than 1,500 kilometers away, greatly expanding the scope of possible operations. Since early April, the local airport in Yekaterinburg has temporarily halted operations five times due to drone threats. In the Chelyabinsk region, a drone strike targeted an airbase housing Su-57 and Su-34 fighter jets.

Economic and Military Consequences for Russia

In the Perm region, drone attacks sparked a fire and damaged equipment at a Lukoil oil refinery located roughly 1,500 kilometers from the border. Additional targets include fertilizer plants and port facilities. Both sides in the conflict exchange daily strikes involving hundreds of drones.

'This makes a quarter of Russian territory—where over 70% of the population lives—accessible to Ukrainian drones,' said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Speaking at the European Political Community summit, Zelenskyy also stated that the summer of 2026 could prove decisive. Ukrainian drone strikes are reducing Kremlin revenues and limiting its ability to generate profits, especially amid rising prices linked to the conflict in the Middle East. Equipment shortages may be offset by the appearance of Ukrainian drones in Moscow's airspace.

The extended strike zone highlights a major evolution in the tactical capabilities of Ukraine's armed forces. This shift could have serious implications for Russia's military potential, as attacks on critical infrastructure may affect both the economy and public morale. Such operations underscore the growing importance of technological innovation in modern warfare, as well as Ukraine's determination to counter Russian aggression across all fronts.

As the conflict escalates, understanding the legal implications surrounding missile defense is crucial.
