Swedish Forces Defeated by Ukrainian Drone Operators During NATO Exercise

Українські дроновики показали вражаючі результати, здолавши шведських військових під час спільних навчань НАТО.

NATO Drills on Gotland

During a NATO training exercise on the Swedish island of Gotland, Ukrainian combat drone operators successfully neutralized Swedish military units. The scenario imagined an unspecified country threatening Sweden, NATO's newest member. Although Ukraine is not part of the alliance, it participated as an advisor on drone warfare, showcasing its expertise in unmanned aerial systems.

In the exercise, Ukraine played the role of the aggressor. The scenario included power outages and food shortages on Gotland caused by sabotage. Ultimately, the Ukrainian operators completely defeated the Swedish units, demonstrating the effectiveness of drone tactics. Training was paused three times so troops could analyze their mistakes and refine their strategy. As one operator, call sign Taryk, explained:

“The training was stopped three times so the troops could understand what to do better. But in real life, they would already be dead.”

Gotland’s Strategic Importance

Located in the Baltic Sea between Russia’s Kaliningrad and Sweden, Gotland holds significant strategic value for regional security. General Michael Claesson emphasized:

“If you control Gotland, you effectively control the central Baltic.”

The exercise scenario also raised concerns about potential Russian aggression, which might test NATO by seizing this territory. “A very probable scenario is that Putin will use Gotland to test NATO: try to seize a thin strip of alliance territory to see the collective response,” Claesson noted.

The drills took place amid shifts in U.S. military presence in Europe. President Donald Trump ordered the withdrawal of at least 5,000 American troops from Germany. “Any change in the American presence affects the overall dynamic,” said Sweden’s Supreme Commander, General Claesson. He added that Trump’s statements about reducing forces in Europe are perceived as a signal that Americans are leaving, even though that is not the case.

Sweden and Finland joined NATO in 2024, driven by the need to strengthen security amid heightened regional tensions following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Participants in the exercises, such as a pilot with the call sign Karat, highlighted the value of hands-on training:

  • “Western forces cannot understand what it’s really like. You have to see it with your own eyes.”
  • U.S. Army Brigadier General Curtis King also noted, “We are not there yet,” hinting at the need for further improvement in military skills and strategies to counter potential threats.

Ukraine’s involvement in the NATO exercises on Gotland underscores the importance of international security cooperation, particularly given the threat from Russia. The effectiveness of drone tactics demonstrated by Ukrainian operators serves as a critical lesson for allies in shaping defense strategies. These drills also highlight the growing role of drones in modern conflicts, potentially transforming future warfare approaches.

The recent exercises in Gotland highlight the evolving dynamics of military strategies in the region. For a more in-depth look at how Ukrainian drone operators challenged NATO forces during these drills, it's essential to explore the broader implications of such tactics in the context of modern warfare.
