159 Russian vessels disabled in two seas by Ukrainian drone strikes

Українські дронові атаки вразили 159 російських суден у різних морях.

Operation Molochka: Targeted hits on shadow fleet

On July 17, drones from Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces struck 12 vessels belonging to Russia's shadow fleet in the Black Sea. This attack is part of a broader campaign dubbed Operation Molochka, which has disabled 159 enemy vessels across two seas in just 12 days. The operation's primary aim is to cripple Russia's logistics for oil, fuel, and cargo—goods Moscow uses to bypass international sanctions.

The July 17 strikes targeted the following types of vessels:

  • nine cargo ships,
  • one tanker,
  • one LNG tanker,
  • one tugboat.

Of the 159 total vessels hit, 117 were operating in the Sea of Azov and 42 in the Black Sea. Notably, the drones avoid creating holes in the hulls to prevent oil spills and environmental damage.

Disruption to shipping and economic fallout

Shipping along the Azov-Don Sea Canal has ground to a halt following the strikes on civilian vessels. This canal was a critical route for exporting up to 30% of Russia's grain from the Rostov region. Just before this wave, Ukrainian drones had already struck 147 vessels over a 10-day period in the same two seas as part of the ongoing operation.

As Robert Magyar Brovdi noted, 'Correction: it was being exported. The rest of the text is correct.'

This highlights the operation's critical role in disrupting supply chains that underpin Russia's economy.

Operation Molochka demonstrates Ukraine's focused strategy of damaging key elements of the enemy's maritime infrastructure, potentially crippling Russia's ability to sustain both its military and economic activities. The shutdown of the Azov-Don Canal—a vital corridor for Russian grain exports—could trigger further economic strain for Moscow by limiting its access to international agricultural markets.

As the situation escalates, Ukrainian drones have recently targeted 14 Russian vessels in a single night, highlighting the intensity of Operation Molochka. This increased frequency of strikes underlines Ukraine's commitment to dismantling the operational capabilities of Russia's shadow fleet, which is crucial for undermining Moscow's economic stability.
