Ukrainian Drones Now Target Russian Rear Areas Up to 300 Kilometers Away

Безпілотники України тепер націлені на російські райони на відстані до 300 кілометрів.

A New Chapter in Ukraine's Drone Warfare

Ukraine has entered a new phase of drone warfare by ramping up production of mid-range strike unmanned aerial vehicles. These drones can hit objectives located between 20 and 300 kilometers from the front lines. With this capability, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have gained the ability to put strategic ammunition depots, command centers, fuel infrastructure, key railway hubs, and air defense positions deep inside enemy territory under fire. Previously, Russian commanders felt secure at distances of 50 to 150 kilometers from the frontline, but that zone has now become a trap.

These tactical shifts have forced occupying forces to push their logistics bases further back into their own territory. This has critically extended supply routes, significantly increasing the time needed to deliver ammunition and equipment to the front.

“The area they considered safe has now become a new kill zone”

Drone Development and Its Strategic Importance

Funding for the sector is coordinated by government bodies together with international donors. A key player in drone development is the Ukrainian company 'General Cherry,' which advanced to the second round of the U.S. Drone Dominance Program run by the Pentagon's Defense Innovation Unit. Competing against hundreds of companies from around the world, 'General Cherry' was recognized as the most effective in terms of target strikes. Company CEO Grishin stated: 'We entered the program as Ukraine's number one in strike efficiency.'

Alongside these developments, Ukrainian manufacturers are also advancing FPV drones, naval drones, electronic warfare systems, and long-range weapons. A specialized drone summit currently taking place in Latvia underscores the growing importance of unmanned technologies in modern conflict. Ukraine continues to strengthen its position in this field, which holds strategic value for national defense.

This new phase of drone warfare highlights Ukraine's significant progress in military technology, which could substantially alter the course of the conflict. Scaling up mid-range drone production not only complicates enemy logistics but also enables Ukraine to more effectively destroy critical targets deep behind enemy lines. As a result, drone development has become a key factor in ensuring national security and bolstering the country's defense capabilities.

In response to Ukraine's advancements in drone warfare, Russia is ramping up its own production capabilities. The Kremlin plans to manufacture over 15 million drones by 2026, aiming to replicate the effective tactics employed by Ukrainian forces. This escalation highlights the ongoing arms race in the region and the critical importance of drone technology in modern conflicts.
