Ukrainian Specialists Assist Middle Eastern Partners
Ukrainian defense experts are now providing direct assistance to Middle Eastern nations in countering the threat posed by Iranian-made 'Shahed' kamikaze drones. According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, a total of 228 Ukrainian specialists are currently stationed in Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Jordan. These personnel are helping local militaries develop air defense systems and enhance their protection against drone-based threats. This deployment builds on Ukraine's hard-won, extensive battlefield experience against these specific weapons systems.
Zelenskyy noted that Ukraine had previously sent 201 experts to the region, and the number has since increased.
“It's not 210 anymore, but 228 of our experts in Qatar, in the Emirates. We are also working with Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Jordan. As for the details... I will not disclose them. We are working; for now, we are on the ground,” stated Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Expanding International Defense Cooperation
Furthermore, more than ten countries have approached Ukraine for support in defending against 'Shahed' drones. Zelenskyy acknowledged the high skill level of local air defense specialists but pointed out their limited practical experience in countering massed 'Shahed' attacks.
“I want to say that the local air defense specialists are at a fairly high level, by the way, but they work more with ballistics. As for low-altitude air defense and how to work against massed 'Shahed' strikes, apart from ours – I think – no one else has such experience,” said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
In a related development, the Japanese government is considering the purchase of strike drones manufactured in Ukraine. This signals growing international interest in Ukrainian drone technology and military expertise. Slightly less than a year ago, Ukraine also proposed a drone deal to the United States, highlighting the country's proactive stance in security and defense matters.
The involvement of Ukrainian experts in training and supporting Middle Eastern nations underscores Ukraine's rising international recognition as a key player in defense, particularly regarding modern drone threats. This cooperation highlights the necessity of international collaboration to counter new security challenges, which may have long-term implications for global policy and stability. As Ukraine extends its military expertise to the Middle East, it is not the only nation seeking to bolster regional defense capabilities. Recently, the United States has expressed interest in Ukraine's military assistance for operations in the area, highlighting a broader trend of international collaboration aimed at countering emerging threats.
