Biodiversity Monitoring Training Held in Finland

Ukrainian officials and civil society representatives have completed a training program in Finland focused on biodiversity monitoring and reporting according to EU standards. This initiative is part of the Ukrainian-Finnish Environmental Monitoring (UFEM) project, which aims to support Ukraine in assessing environmental damage and developing monitoring for surface water quality and biodiversity. This cooperation is particularly significant as Ukraine aligns its environmental policies with European frameworks.

The field training included participants from:

  • The Ministry of Economy of Ukraine
  • Scientific institutions
  • Environmental protection agencies
  • The civil society sector

The curriculum covered organizing biodiversity monitoring and reporting in line with the EU's Habitats and Birds Directives. Experts from the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) and the Finnish Museum of Natural History (LUOMUS) shared practical experience in biodiversity monitoring, data collection and analysis, and assessing the status of flora, fauna, and habitats.

Data Collection Methods and International Partnership

The training placed special emphasis on data collection techniques and completing reporting forms for various taxonomic groups. The UFEM project is funded by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, highlighting the importance of international collaboration in environmental protection.

This program marks a crucial step in enhancing the capacity of Ukrainian institutions to monitor biodiversity and assess environmental conditions, which is vital amid current ecological challenges. Engaging international experts and implementing European standards will help Ukraine improve its environmental practices and reporting, potentially leading to better conservation of the country's natural resources and biodiversity.
