22-Centimeter Bone Fragments Transplanted into Wounded Soldier in Breakthrough Ukrainian Surgery

Унікальна хірургічна операція в Україні: солдат отримав пересадку фрагментів кісток для відновлення після поранення.

Ukrainian Surgeons Perform Groundbreaking Double Bone Graft

In a landmark procedure, surgeons at the National Center for Surgery and Transplantation named after Oleksandr Shalimov, working alongside trauma specialists from the Ministry of Internal Affairs hospital, successfully transplanted two segments of fibula bone, each measuring 22 centimeters, into a wounded soldier during a single operation. This medical achievement was made possible by the doctors' exceptional expertise and the use of a modern 3D microscope, which provided 26x magnification throughout the surgery.

The operation aimed to save the leg of a 53-year-old serviceman named Oleksandr from Kryvyi Rih, who serves in the Svoboda battalion of the Rubizh brigade.

Operation Details

Oleksandr sustained severe injuries on the Donetsk front near Pokrovsk during a close-quarters combat engagement. A bullet struck his right side, and an explosion shattered his femur, forcing medical personnel to remove 22 centimeters of the damaged bone. For the autotransplantation, surgeons harvested two 22-centimeter segments of fibula from other parts of the patient's body, taking them along with a small portion of skin.

During the procedure, doctors stitched microvessels with threads thinner than a human hair to minimize trauma to the donor site and prevent functional impairment.

“The absence of the fibula bones in Oleksandr will not be noticeable,” noted Dr. Yevhen Symulyk.

The patient's condition is currently satisfactory, with stable test results and successful graft integration. As a result, Oleksandr no longer requires bandage changes. Only a few similar cases are documented in global medical literature, but a simultaneous transplant of such large bone fragments had never been performed before.

This operation represents a significant advance in treating soldiers who suffer severe battlefield injuries. It showcases the capabilities of Ukrainian medicine during wartime and highlights the importance of supporting troops defending the nation.

The procedure not only demonstrates the high level of surgical skill among Ukrainian doctors but also underscores innovative medical approaches applied in conflict zones. Improving treatment methods for severe trauma is critical for providing necessary care to soldiers risking their lives on the front lines. Such successes in medicine could lay the groundwork for further development of surgical practice in Ukraine and make a substantial contribution to restoring the lives of wounded servicemen.

In addition to groundbreaking surgical techniques, the healthcare landscape in Ukraine is evolving with the recent opening of a new trauma center equipped with state-of-the-art technology in Kyiv. This facility aims to enhance the treatment capabilities for injured servicemen like Oleksandr, ensuring timely and effective medical care in critical situations.
