Why the Bundeswehr Is Learning from Ukraine: Military Instructors Arrive in Germany

Німецькі військові інструктори отримують досвід з українського фронту.

Ukraine’s Battle-Hardened Trainers Join Forces with the Bundeswehr

Ukrainian military instructors, bringing real combat experience from the front lines, have arrived in Germany to train soldiers of the Bundeswehr. This partnership is designed to help the German army adapt to the realities of modern, high-tech warfare. Lieutenant General Christian Freuding, head of the task force coordinating aid to Ukraine at Germany’s Ministry of Defense, announced the initiative. The news was shared in an interview with Welt and later picked up by the Ukrainian portal Glavcom.

The first teams of Ukrainian trainers have already begun work at several Bundeswehr military schools. They are currently conducting sessions at:

  • the Armor School
  • the Engineer School
  • the specialized training center for security systems

In the coming days, additional groups are expected to start operations at the Artillery School as well. According to Christian Freuding,

“the experience of the Ukrainians is unique and critically important for the Bundeswehr.”

Expanding the Training Program

Germany also plans to significantly broaden the program that brings Ukrainian military personnel into Bundeswehr training. This expansion comes on the heels of Germany’s adoption of a new national military strategy, which officially identifies Russia as the primary security threat in Europe. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated that

“the Kremlin under Vladimir Putin views military force as a tool for advancing its own interests and is preparing for a direct confrontation with NATO.”

The strategy document further notes that Russia is waging a hybrid war against the West, employing espionage, sabotage, and cyberattacks. Germany aims to restructure its military to meet the demands of contemporary warfare, with a particular focus on:

  • drone operations
  • a wide range of electronic warfare tools
  • trench warfare
  • operational logistics

This training cooperation between Ukraine and Germany underscores the importance of international support for Ukraine amid Russia’s ongoing aggression. By integrating Ukrainian instructors into Bundeswehr education, Germany not only enhances the skills of its own troops but also fosters a valuable exchange of knowledge that could prove critical in future conflicts. Given the current security challenges in Europe, such initiatives are increasingly vital for strengthening the defense capabilities of NATO member states.

As the Bundeswehr enhances its training capabilities with the insights gained from Ukrainian instructors, it is crucial to understand the broader implications of this collaboration.
