Successful Heart Surgery for One-Year-Old Demyan
One-year-old Demyan from Zakarpattia, born with a congenital heart defect and a rare condition known as situs inversus, has undergone a successful heart operation in Lviv. In this unique anatomical arrangement, his heart, spleen, and pancreas are positioned on the right side, while his liver and appendix are on the left. At nine months old, doctors detected a heart murmur, leading to a diagnosis of an atrial septal defect with partial anomalous pulmonary venous drainage. His pulmonary veins were draining into the right atrium, which, due to the mirror-image reversal, was physically located on the left side of his body.
Surgical Procedure and Outcome
Surgeons in Lviv performed the minimally invasive procedure through a small incision under the armpit. During the two-hour operation, the cardiothoracic team closed the large atrial septal defect and redirected the blood flow from the pulmonary veins into the anatomically correct left atrium. The surgery was a success. Demyan was moved to a regular ward the following day and was discharged home just five days after the operation.
Following the intervention, the boy is eating well, gaining weight, and sleeping soundly. The hospital where the surgery took place explained the condition:
"This means his heart, spleen, and pancreas are on the right, while his liver and, for example, his appendix are on the left. Essentially, all the organs in his thoracic and abdominal cavities are positioned opposite to the norm."
Physicians further clarified the complexity:
"His pulmonary veins were draining not into their native left atrium, but into the right atrium, which, due to the mirror-image organ placement, was physically situated on the left. This heart defect combined with the baby's anatomical peculiarities required serious surgical intervention."
Demyan's case highlights the advanced cardiac care available in Ukraine, even amid challenging circumstances. He is not the only child requiring complex cardiac help; six-year-old Mykola Zherebov, who successfully received a donor heart transplant, also underwent two surgeries and required ECMO life support due to a congenital heart defect. Demyan's successful operation stands as a testament to progress in cardiothoracic surgery and offers hope to many families facing similar challenges.
This case underscores the critical importance of advancing medical technologies and treatment options for children with congenital heart defects. The minimally invasive techniques used in modern cardiac surgery help reduce patient risks and accelerate recovery. Successful outcomes like this can form a foundation for further medical research and improved treatment of congenital anomalies, a pressing concern for families both in Ukraine and around the world.
In addition to Demyan's remarkable surgery, the expertise of Lviv's medical professionals is showcased in various complex cases, such as a young girl who was successfully treated for a rare condition known as Hirschsprung's disease. This highlights the advanced surgical techniques available in the region, which continue to save lives and improve health outcomes for children facing significant medical challenges.
