Ukrainian Pilots Warn of Critical Threat: Outdated Gear Jeopardizes MiG-29 and Su-27 Combat Readiness

Українські пілоти підкреслюють серйозну небезпеку: застаріле обладнання ставить під загрозу боєздатність винищувачів.

Ukrainian Military Pilots Raise Alarm

Ukrainian combat pilots are sounding the alarm over obsolete flight equipment for their MiG-29, Su-27, and L-39 aircraft. They warn that the service life of this gear may expire before the airframes themselves are retired. This long-standing issue, persisting for years, has seen modernization efforts repeatedly stalled by significant obstacles.

The pilots operating these aircraft note that the flight equipment they currently use was originally designed in the 1960s and 1980s. This raises major concerns, as modern combat conditions demand up-to-date and effective systems. For comparison, Serbian MiG-29 pilots are equipped with more modern oxygen masks and helmet systems, which significantly enhances their in-flight safety and operational effectiveness.

Modernization and Supply Challenges

In 2020, the United States supplied Ukraine with modern helmets, oxygen masks, and life support systems. However, this equipment was not approved for combat use due to its failure to meet national military standards. Consequently, Ukrainian pilots are forced to rely on antiquated gear, including:

  • ZSh-3 helmets
  • ShL-82 leather flight headphones
  • KM-32 oxygen masks on L-39 trainer aircraft

In the absence of official solutions, pilots are attempting to address the problem of outdated equipment through private initiatives and support from foreign charitable foundations. They recognize a pressing reality: their flight gear will wear out before their aircraft do. One representative from the flight community emphasized this point, stating:

"If there is a genuine plan to fight using MiGs until 2030, it would be wise to supply flight crews with new equipment, as it is crucial for performing daily missions."

The issue of obsolete flight equipment for Ukraine's fighter jets is of critical importance to the nation's defense capabilities. With the ongoing intensity of combat operations, pilot safety and modern technology are paramount, making the modernization and renewal of this gear an urgent necessity. This context underscores that resolving this equipment crisis is vital for enhancing the effectiveness of Ukraine's air force and ensuring the reliable execution of combat missions.
