Current Status of Ukrainian Ports and Cargo Traffic
Since the start of the year, Ukrainian ports have processed over 15 million tons of cargo. The ports of Greater Odesa accounted for 14.5 million tons of this total, including 8.5 million tons of grain exports. Danube River ports handled 1.1 million tons, with grain exports comprising 221,000 tons. Since its inception in September 2023, the Ukrainian Maritime Corridor has facilitated the transport of nearly 179 million tons of cargo, of which 107 million tons was grain, involving 7,087 vessels. These figures highlight the critical role of Ukraine's maritime logistics in sustaining global food supplies.
Impact of Military Actions on Port Infrastructure
The ongoing war has inflicted severe damage on Ukraine's maritime infrastructure. Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, 726 port facilities have been damaged or partially destroyed, alongside 153 civilian vessels. These attacks have resulted in 238 civilian casualties.
Oleksiy Kubela emphasized: 'Behind every ton of cargo is the daily work of people operating under constant threat of shelling. Port workers, sailors, logisticians, and engineers ensure vessel movement and the fulfillment of export contracts under extremely difficult conditions. Thanks to this work, the Ukrainian Maritime Corridor remains a reliable route for the world and a key instrument for guaranteeing global food security.'
This data underscores the importance of Ukrainian ports to the global economy, particularly for food security, as the country faces immense challenges due to the war. The continued operation of these ports, despite the threats, demonstrates the resilience of the Ukrainian economy and highlights the necessity of international support. Ukraine's grain exports are critically important for many nations dependent on its agricultural products.
