Delegation Visits Odesa Region
After returning from Baku, officials traveled to the Odesa region for an on-site meeting with port leaders, the Odesa Regional Military Administration (OVA), and the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVA). The main focus was safeguarding ports and personnel amid ongoing Russian attacks. The discussion also highlighted the critical need to protect port infrastructure.
During the visit, mobile air defense units were established at several ports. The delegation inspected logistics facilities and reviewed reconstruction efforts that continue despite persistent threats. Since the start of 2023, over 197 million tons of cargo have moved through the Ukrainian maritime corridor, including 117 million tons of grain. This underscores the vital role Ukrainian ports play in the national economy and global food security.
Why Ports Matter for Ukraine
For Ukraine, ports are now a matter of national resilience, uninterrupted logistics, and community support. Russia systematically targets grain terminals, energy facilities, and transport routes. Notably, some ports have already achieved strong results with protective systems, and this model needs to be replicated across all facilities. Despite relentless Russian attacks, Ukrainian ports continue to operate—driving exports, sustaining the economy, and fulfilling a mission critical to many nations worldwide.
This visit underscores the importance of protecting infrastructure during Ukraine's ongoing war. The creation of mobile air defense groups and the emphasis on port safety highlight the severity of the threats the country faces.
Ports remain essential for economic stability and food security, both for Ukraine and the global market, making their defense a top policy priority.
As the situation intensifies, the role of veteran dockworkers becomes increasingly crucial in defending Ukrainian ports.
