Why Ukrainian Startups Are Relocating En Masse: The Domestic Barriers to Business Growth

Зміни в бізнес-середовищі України: нові виклики для стартапів та їх вплив на зростання компаній.

Challenges Facing Ukraine's Economy

In a recent interview with political analyst Yuriy Romanenko, Yevhen Utkin, founder of the company 'Kvazar Micro,' voiced serious concerns about Ukraine's economic climate. He highlighted two critical issues: the lack of access to startup funding and the difficulties in selling companies when they are ready to scale. According to Utkin, these factors are driving entrepreneurs to leave the country. This trend is occurring as Ukraine continues its broader efforts to integrate with Western economic structures.

'Business is about entry and exit. At the entry point, you must have access to capital and financing. We don't have that access here. The second part is the business exit. An exit isn't about quietly shutting down; it's about building a business and selling it,' noted Yevhen Utkin.

Utkin emphasized that a significant number of Ukrainian startups, such as Grammarly, are relocating to Silicon Valley or other jurisdictions precisely because they offer superior conditions for business development.

He also pointed to the substantial economic losses the state incurs due to this entrepreneurial migration:

  • For each departing entrepreneur, the state effectively loses a million dollars.
  • When someone leaves here, the state loses a million dollars in potential capitalization.
'The state's role is to build infrastructure and an intellectual ecosystem so that entrepreneurs or artists can come and realize their projects. The state's role is to serve,' stated Yevhen Utkin.

Thus, Utkin's remarks underscore an urgent need for changes in Ukraine's financial policies and entrepreneurial support systems to stem the outflow of talent and strengthen the nation's economic position.

The Critical Need for Business Investment

The problems Utkin describes could have severe long-term consequences for Ukraine's economy. The exodus of entrepreneurs and startups risks stifling innovation and increasing economic dependence. Attracting capital and fostering a favorable business environment are therefore crucial for ensuring the country's economic stability and growth. Consequently, enhancing state support and building an effective entrepreneurial ecosystem represent vital steps in addressing these challenges.

In light of the challenges highlighted by Yevhen Utkin, it becomes increasingly evident that the government’s inability to establish clear business tariffs is a significant barrier to entrepreneurial success.
