Demonstration in Dublin Highlights Crisis in Oleshky
In Dublin’s city center, activists from Ukraine and Ireland united to draw attention to the dire situation faced by residents of Oleshky, a town in the Kherson region currently under occupation. The community there is experiencing severe food shortages and an escalating humanitarian crisis. The next rally is scheduled for October 25 at 2:00 PM. The Ukrainian Crisis Center in Ireland shared details about the event on their Facebook page.
During the protest, participants laid out empty plates atop a Ukrainian flag, symbolizing the looming threat of starvation. They also sang the Ukrainian national anthem and urged the global community to address the plight of people living under occupation. Earlier in October, the Ukrainian community in Dublin held a similar event near the General Post Office (GPO), also advocating for Oleshky.
Oleshky Faces a Severe Humanitarian Emergency
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha has highlighted the grave humanitarian conditions in Oleshky, where civilians—including children—are deprived of sufficient food, medicine, clean water, electricity, and medical care. He has called on the United Nations, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and other international bodies to guarantee humanitarian access and facilitate the safe evacuation of residents.
Dmytro Lubinets, the Ukrainian Parliament’s Commissioner for Human Rights, reported that Russia has repeatedly failed to confirm plans to organize humanitarian evacuations from Oleshky. In response, Ukraine has urgently requested the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) to review the humanitarian situation in the occupied town.
On October 4, soldiers from the 11th Mikhail Hrushevsky Brigade and the 34th Kherson Regiment of the National Guard delivered humanitarian aid to Oleshky for the second time. Approximately 2,000 residents have been living without access to food, potable water, or medicine under strict Russian occupation since April 2026. Oleshky has been under occupation since the early days of the full-scale invasion, with conditions worsening sharply since spring 2026. Russian forces continue to block residents from leaving for Ukrainian-controlled areas.
The crisis in Oleshky exemplifies the broader humanitarian emergencies caused by ongoing conflict and occupation. Protests organized by Ukrainian diasporas worldwide aim to raise international awareness of the civilian population’s suffering. It is critical that global organizations take decisive action to provide humanitarian aid and protect the rights of those trapped in these hazardous circumstances. Each demonstration serves as a catalyst to influence policy decisions and mobilize support on the international stage.
The ongoing humanitarian crisis in Oleshky has prompted urgent appeals from various international organizations. For instance, Russia's refusal to approve evacuation efforts has exacerbated the plight of civilians, further highlighting the need for immediate action and support from the global community.
