Ukrainian Red Cross Aids 250,000 People Through 100 Heating Shelters

Український Червоний Хрест надає допомогу 250 000 людям, розгорнувши 100 тимчасових опалювальних пунктів.

Ukrainian Red Cross Provides Critical Winter Aid Amidst Energy Crisis

In response to a severe energy crisis, the Ukrainian Red Cross is delivering vital humanitarian assistance, including the operation of heating shelters, the supply of generators, and other essential support. Since the crisis escalated in January 2026, the organization has been actively supporting over 100 heating shelters run by the State Emergency Service (SES) in Kyiv. This ongoing effort has provided aid to more than 250,000 people over a five-week period. This support is crucial as millions face winter without reliable power or heating due to the ongoing conflict.

To assist residents seeking refuge, the Ukrainian Red Cross has distributed the following supplies:

  • Over 15,260 blankets;
  • 5,040 sleeping bag sets;
  • 1,380 sets of bed linens;
  • 5,940 hygiene kits.

The organization is also supporting the work of 40 SES field kitchens, which provide hot meals for those in need.

Power Generation and Broader Support Efforts

To address widespread power shortages, the Ukrainian Red Cross is distributing 560 generators with a total capacity of 9.16 MW across the country. Since the start of the full-scale invasion, the organization has supplied over 15,000 generators. Of the current batch, 447 units were sourced from the strategic reserves of the European Union's #rescEU mechanism. An additional 34 powerful generators were provided by the German and Belgian Red Cross societies.

Maksym Dotsenko, Director General of the Ukrainian Red Cross, stated: 'Since the beginning of January 2026, the organization has supported the operation of over 100 heating shelters... During this period, more than 250,000 people have received assistance.'

This underscores the organization's extensive efforts during the energy crisis and its commitment to helping people through difficult times.

Additional activities of the Ukrainian Red Cross include psychosocial support, food delivery, and targeted aid for people with limited mobility and those living alone. The generators being distributed are used to power critical infrastructure, resilience points, and social service institutions.

Through collaboration with international partners such as the European Union #rescEU, the German Red Cross, and the Belgian Red Cross, the organization continues its work to support the most vulnerable. Gratitude for support is also extended to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, the US Department of State, and the European Union.

This initiative by the Ukrainian Red Cross is a key component of the humanitarian response to an energy crisis exacerbated by armed conflict. Supporting heating shelters and providing essential resources highlights the growing needs of people facing extreme hardship and the concerted efforts of the international community to aid Ukraine. In the face of persistent challenges like power outages, such assistance is critical for survival and meeting the basic needs of the population.
