Russian EW Systems Caused Ukrainian Drone to Detonate in Romanian Port

Російські електронні системи викликали вибух українського беспілотника в румунському порту.

Drone Incident at Constanta Port

Romanian President Nicusor Dan has confirmed that a naval drone which exploded on June 5 in the port of Constanta belonged to Ukraine. According to him, the drone fell victim to Russian electronic warfare (EW) measures, causing Ukrainian forces to lose control of the device. As a result, four Ukrainian naval drones self-detonated, but no casualties or significant damage were reported.

Details of the Incident

The event occurred during a Ukrainian military operation against Russian aggression. One of the unmanned vessels exploded directly inside Constanta port, while others detonated near the port under the observation of the coast guard and approximately 145 kilometers east of Constanta. The Ukrainian Navy confirmed that the uncrewed boat lost control due to enemy electronic warfare interference.

After the drone was detected, the Romanian government contacted their Ukrainian counterparts, who verified that control over four units had been lost. Constanta County Prefect Adrian Picoiu suggested there may have been five drones in total. He also noted that Romanian authorities have asked Ukrainian officials to report similar situations that could pose risks to Romania.

Nicusor Dan stated that 'the entry of this drone into Romania's sovereign space is a direct consequence of the war launched by Russia against Ukraine.'

The Ukrainian Navy further confirmed that 'while carrying out missions in the Black Sea operational zone, one of the naval uncrewed boats of the Ukrainian Navy lost control under the influence of enemy EW assets and ended up near the Romanian coast.'

This incident underscores the risks associated with military operations in the Black Sea region, where activity by both Ukrainian and Russian forces can lead to unforeseen situations. Cooperation between Romanian and Ukrainian military structures during such incidents is essential for ensuring regional security, especially amid the escalating conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

  • Countries bordering the conflict zone continue to strengthen their security measures.
  • International cooperation remains critical for stability in the region.

This incident highlights the escalating tensions in the region, especially as Russian drone activity intensifies, leading to direct threats to civilian infrastructure in Romania. The implications of military operations in the Black Sea are becoming increasingly complex, underscoring the need for vigilance and cooperation among neighboring nations.
