Hungary’s New Record Set at Budapest Ukrainian Festival with 4,822 Varenyky Made for Charity

У Будапешті на фестивалі української культури приготували понад 4,800 вареників для благодійності.

Ukrainian Cultural and Culinary Festival Breaks Records in Budapest

For the second time, Budapest hosted a vibrant Ukrainian cultural and gastronomic charity festival, where an impressive new Hungarian record was set by producing 4,822 traditional varenyky (dumplings). The event took place in Városháza Park and aimed to raise funds for the Kherson Regional Children's Clinical Hospital and the 'Healthy Mom – Healthy Child' initiative. This feat was officially recorded in the 'Size' category during the celebration of Cossack Day.

Festival Attendance and Highlights

Approximately 5,000 attendees gathered, including families, children from Saturday Ukrainian schools, Budapest residents, and international delegations, notably from Ukraine. The festival's rich program featured:

  • Traditional Ukrainian music and dance performances
  • Celebrations of Cossack heritage
  • Showcases of authentic Ukrainian costumes
  • Sampling of Ukrainian culinary specialties
  • Creative workshops
  • Children's activities
  • Various charitable projects

The record was verified by an international team from the World Records Book, including Alexander Lazuka, Christina Ghiresh, Nadia Yashan, and Hanna Krysyuk.

Hanna Krysyuk, CEO of the World Records Book, expressed gratitude to Liliana Greksa, the event organizers, diplomatic representatives, international delegates, and everyone involved in making varenyky and donating to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Honorable diplomas from the World Records Book were awarded to the event’s initiators and partners, including Liliana Greksa, the parliamentary spokesperson for the Ukrainian minority in the Hungarian Parliament, and the 'New Wave' Society.

The festival was organized by the State Self-Government of the Ukrainian Nationality in Hungary, the Ukrainian Cultural and Documentation Center in Hungary, Liliana Greksa, and the 'New Wave' Society. Fundraising efforts to support Ukrainian medical professionals and children continue, underscoring the humanitarian focus of this event.

This festival not only promoted Ukrainian culture within Hungary but also served as a vital platform for uniting the Ukrainian community and raising awareness about the needs of Ukrainian medical workers and children requiring assistance.

Setting the varenyky-making record stands as a powerful symbol of solidarity and support amid the ongoing challenges Ukraine faces today.

As the Budapest festival showcases the vibrant Ukrainian culture through culinary delights, it's worth noting that similar celebrations have also taken place in other cities. For instance, the Bloor West Village Ukrainian Festival in Toronto recently marked its 30th anniversary, highlighting the enduring spirit and community support for Ukrainian traditions abroad.
