Drone attack brings tragedy

Ukrainian figure skater Kyrylo Marsak has revealed the devastating impact of a Russian drone strike that destroyed his family home in Kherson. The resulting fire consumed roughly 90% of the apartments in the building. Among the victims was an elderly woman, the grandmother of his longtime best friend. This is far from the first time residential areas have been hit; earlier attacks had already damaged and completely leveled the Kherson ice rink where Marsak first began skating.

Marsak speaks out on Russian athletes

Marsak, a Ukrainian figure skater and a competitor in the 2026 Olympic Games, now trains and prepares for competitions far from home, as part of his family remains in Kherson. His father is serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, defending the country. These events have driven Marsak to take a firm public stance against allowing Russian athletes to return to international competition.

'And once again, there is talk about letting Russian representatives participate in international competitions. It is so cynical on the part of those who so insistently demand the return of Russian figure skaters. The only thing they can represent is pain, destruction, and death. If you can tolerate that, you are a monster.' Kyrylo Marsak

His words underscore the deep emotions and grief that Ukrainian athletes carry amid war and destruction. Marsak continues to fight for peace and justice, leaving behind the horrific consequences of attacks on his hometown and his personal life.

The situation Marsak faces is a stark example of how war reshapes lives, especially for athletes whose careers and personal futures are drastically altered. His reaction to the potential return of Russian athletes to international events reflects the profound pain felt across Ukrainian society, which continues to suffer from the effects of aggression. These events highlight the need for continued international support for Ukraine, particularly in the realm of sports, where fairness and moral values must take priority.
