Roman Degtiarov Secures European Championship Title

Roman Degtiarov, a 17-year-old chess player from Kharkiv, Ukraine, has won the 2026 European Individual Chess Championship. The tournament was held in Katowice, Poland, from April 7th to 19th. Degtiarov claimed the sole championship title by scoring 9 points out of a possible 11.

This victory is a remarkable achievement in a highly competitive field. The event followed the Swiss system format and featured approximately 500 participants. Degtiarov entered the tournament ranked 126th. His decisive final-round victory over Spanish Grandmaster David Anton was crucial to his overall success in the competition.
