Yurii Orlov’s Tragic Death

Following the deadly shelling by Russian forces that claimed the life of hockey and floorball player Yurii Orlov, Ukrainian skeleton competitor Vladyslav Heraskevych has issued a direct appeal to the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Orlov, a product of the Kryzhynka hockey school, competed in Ukraine’s national hockey championship between 2015 and 2017, playing for the clubs Kryzhynka-Kompanion and Generals. Over the course of 66 games, he scored 7 goals and recorded 5 assists, earning both silver and bronze medals in the Ukrainian championship. He later also played for the floorball club KFK.

The tragic event unfolded on the night of May 14, when Russian forces launched a large-scale combined assault on Kyiv using ballistic missiles and drones. Multiple districts of the capital came under fire, including:

  • Darnytskyi
  • Dniprovskyi

  • Solomianskyi
  • Desnianskyi
  • Sviatoshynskyi

'Dear IOC representatives, do you believe that for him, his family, and his teammates, 'sport is beyond politics'?' Vladyslav Heraskevych

Heraskevych’s statement underscores the urgency of acknowledging the tragedy that befell Yurii Orlov. The Ukrainian Floorball Federation also expressed heartfelt condolences to Orlov’s family, friends, and the wider floorball community, stating: 'We received the news of Yurii’s death as a result of Russian shelling with deep sorrow.' The federation added that 'his dedication, professionalism, and humanity will forever remain in the memory of all who had the honor of knowing him.'

Orlov’s death serves as another grim reminder of the ongoing war’s toll in Ukraine and highlights the critical need to support athletes caught in conflict zones. This incident not only reflects a personal tragedy but also the broader reality in which Ukrainian athletes face severe threats to both their sporting careers and personal lives due to military hostilities. Heraskevych’s response and the federations’ statements signal a pressing call for the international community to recognize these challenges and stand with Ukraine during these difficult times.
