Vladyslav Heraskevych's Complaint to the SBU
Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych has submitted a formal complaint to Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) concerning Russian taekwondo athlete Vladislav Larin. The complaint stems from Larin's public support for Russian military personnel engaged in the war against Ukraine. Investigators have now taken up the case to examine Larin's actions.
In 2022, Vladislav Larin publicly called for support of mobilized Russian troops. Heraskevych asserts this constitutes a criminal offense under Ukrainian law.
"This isn't merely about support; it's essentially about fundraising for equipment and aid for the occupying army. His actions bear the hallmarks of encroaching on Ukraine's territorial integrity and financing activities associated with terrorism," Heraskevych stated.
Larin's Actions and Heraskevych's Response
It should be noted that Vladislav Larin is an Olympic champion from Tokyo. He also assisted in raising funds and equipment for Russian soldiers. In one public post, Larin urged residents of Karelia to support mobilized troops, and a video featured the letter 'Z'—a symbol of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. As a consequence of his actions, Larin was barred from participating in the 2024 Olympics.
Heraskevych reported that his SBU complaint was accepted and the materials forwarded for investigative review.
"Opening a criminal case and subsequently referring it to Interpol presents a real chance to prevent this pseudo-neutral athlete from competing, and possibly to have him arrested for crimes against Ukraine," the athlete emphasized.
Consequently, Vladislav Larin's activities have provoked significant outrage within Ukrainian athletic circles and have become the subject of a legal probe.
This incident underscores the ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine, illustrating how sports figures can become entangled in political and social conflicts. The SBU's investigation could have repercussions not only for Larin but for other athletes expressing similar views, potentially leading to shifts in the international sporting landscape. The case highlights the complex intersection of global sports and geopolitics following Russia's full-scale invasion.
