After 3.5 Years in Captivity, a Ukrainian Soldier Returns to Meet Four New Grandchildren

Після тривалого часу полону, український військовий знову об'єднується зі сім'єю та знайомиться з новим поколінням.

Serhiy Hryniuk's Return from Captivity

Ukrainian soldier Serhiy Hryniuk has been freed from Russian captivity after being held for 3 years and 8 months. He was mobilized on March 1, 2022, and his unit had been carrying out missions in the Donetsk region since May 23 of that year. Hryniuk went missing near Lyman but was ultimately among 157 Ukrainians released in a prisoner exchange. This exchange marks a significant moment in the ongoing war, highlighting the human cost behind the front lines.

While Hryniuk was imprisoned, four of his grandchildren were born. He is the father of seven children and now has eight grandchildren in total. Before the war, he worked as a crane operator for the Kolkivske Forestry. Among those freed in the exchange, 139 had been held captive since 2022. The group included soldiers from the Armed Forces, the National Guard, the State Border Guard Service, as well as civilians. Furthermore, 19 of the released had been illegally convicted, with 15 of them sentenced to life imprisonment.

The Prisoner Exchange

The prisoner swap that returned Hryniuk and others was the first such exchange in five months. Notably, Ukraine, the United States, and Russia agreed to exchange a total of 314 prisoners. Serhiy Hryniuk expressed his emotions, stating:

'Forgive me for not listening to you, because I begged you not to go to war.'

He also shared a pivotal moment when he had to stop to call his family, saying:

'Thank God you called me. If you hadn't called, a mine would have torn me apart.'

In closing, he emphasized: 'I will go, I will go, so that my sons and sons-in-law can be at home.'

Serhiy Hryniuk's homecoming is a profound event not only for his family but for society as a whole, demonstrating the continued efforts to conduct prisoner exchanges amid the protracted armed conflict. Such swaps offer a glimmer of hope to other families awaiting the return of their loved ones and underscore the critical role of international support in facilitating humanitarian agreements. In times of war, these events serve as a powerful reminder of the individual human stories behind the statistics and political decisions.
