Adding the Ukrainian Language to Correspondence with Santa Claus
The Ukrainian language will be added to the list of languages for correspondence with Santa Claus, supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and the Santa Claus Post Office. This decision was made possible thanks to the initiative of Olena Ivanovska, the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language. She addressed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in September 2023 to ensure Ukrainian-language responses to letters to Santa Claus.
The Embassy of Ukraine in Finland received a response from Katya Tervonen, the head of the Santa Claus Post Office, who confirmed Santa and the postal elves' readiness to accept letters from Ukrainian children in their native language. Olena Ivanovska emphasized the importance of this step, stating:
“It is extremely important that even in such seemingly symbolic matters as Christmas mail from Santa Claus, the right of Ukrainian children to receive Christmas greetings in the state language is taken into account.”
The Importance of the Initiative
This initiative will undoubtedly be an important step in supporting the Ukrainian language and culture, especially for children eagerly awaiting Christmas letters from Santa Claus.
Adding the Ukrainian language to the list of languages for correspondence with Santa Claus is a significant step in supporting the cultural identity of Ukrainians, especially children, amid modern challenges. This initiative also highlights the importance of communication and connection to traditions that help preserve the national language and culture. In the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, such symbolic gestures can hold special significance for Ukrainians seeking support and recognition on the international stage.
