Ukraine Braces for Intense Cold Snap with Temperatures Plummeting to -22°C

Україна готується до суворих морозів, температура може знизитися до -22°C.

Forecast for Severe Frosts Across Ukraine

Meteorologist Natalia Didenko warns that Ukraine will experience an extreme cold snap, with nighttime temperatures dropping as low as -22°C on February 9th and 10th. This period of intense cold is expected to last approximately 48 hours. The temperature will fall to around -18°C in the coming night before reaching its lowest point of -22°C on those two key nights.

The peak of the freeze will occur on the nights of February 9th and 10th as Arctic air engulfs most of the country. In southern and southwestern regions, nighttime temperatures will be comparatively milder, around -12°C. An anticyclone's influence means significant precipitation is not anticipated during this period. This severe weather event follows a winter already marked by significant challenges for the nation.

Potential Impacts of the Freezing Conditions

The icy period will be brief, lasting only about two days. After February 10th, the atmospheric front is predicted to shift. As Didenko stated,

the frost will be "suppressed," making way for a warmer trend.
'Only two nights of this nasty frost, and then a warmer wave will begin to eat it away,' the meteorologist noted.

The extreme frosts forecast for February 9th and 10th could affect various aspects of life in Ukraine, including:

  • Transportation
  • Energy infrastructure
  • Public health services

Given the low temperatures, ensuring proper preparation by utility services and the public is crucial to mitigate negative consequences. However, according to the forecaster, a gradual temperature increase is expected following this short-lived cold spell, indicating a return to more normal winter conditions.
