Ukrenergo explains the varying duration of power outages: why some regions have no electricity for longer

Енергетики роз'яснюють, чому деякі області страждають від тривалих відключень електроенергії.

Impact of Russian shelling on electricity supply in Ukraine

Ukrenergo explained why the duration of electricity outages in Ukraine varies across different regions due to Russian shelling and limited electricity transmission capabilities. In particular, Russian attacks are aimed at destroying generation facilities in frontline and border regions, which significantly complicates electricity supply. The energy system of Ukraine was not designed for transmitting energy over long distances, which also affects the duration of outages.

Power outages can last from 4 to 18 hours a day, depending on the region and weather conditions. It is expected that the schedules of outages may persist throughout the entire winter season, adding additional difficulties for the population. The head of the board of Ukrenergo noted that he does not rule out the possibility of retaining the outage schedules throughout the whole winter season.

Forecasts and recommendations from experts

Additionally, a loss of about 9 GW of generating capacity is expected in winter, which will complicate the situation with electricity supply. Ukrenergo emphasized that

the enemy's goal is not only to ensure that there are no functioning power plants in a certain area of Ukraine but also to make it as difficult as possible to transmit electricity from other regions to them
. Viktor Kurytev also noted that Russia is systematically destroying generation on the left bank of the Dnipro.

Experts recommend that the population keep a supply of:

  • water
  • non-perishable food
  • power banks
  • alternative lighting sources

This situation highlights the importance of preparing for the winter season amid military actions and energy instability. Electricity outages can negatively impact not only the household needs of the population but also the economic processes in the country. Given the projected loss of generating capacity, Ukraine needs to find effective solutions to ensure stable electricity supply and reduce dependence on vulnerable regions. Strategic steps in energy policy can help in overcoming these challenges.
