Ukrenergo's Statement on Emergency Electricity Supplies
Ukraine's national power grid operator, Ukrenergo, has responded to reports of a potential halt to emergency electricity supplies from Slovakia, stating it has not received any official notification terminating the agreement. Both Ukrenergo and its Slovak counterpart, SEPS, are members of the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E), which obligates them to follow established rules. According to Ukrenergo, the last request for emergency assistance from Slovakia was made over a month ago and was for a limited volume. Such emergency aid from this direction has been infrequent and involved only short-term supplies.
Ukrenergo emphasized that it has not received any official documents from Slovak operator SEPS regarding a unilateral termination of the mutual emergency assistance agreement. The company stated:
'As of now, NEC Ukrenergo has not received any official documents from the Slovak system operator, SEPS, on the unilateral termination of the agreement on mutual emergency assistance.'
Ukrenergo added that it will analyze the Slovak side's proposal in the shortest possible time.
Situation Regarding Commercial Electricity Imports
Ukrenergo also stressed that there is currently no discussion of any restrictions on commercial electricity imports from Slovakia. The allocated capacity of interstate cross-border connections is being used according to the results of held auctions. This comes after Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico urged the national grid operator to consider temporarily halting emergency electricity exports to Ukraine if the transportation of oil via the Druzhba pipeline is not restored.
Thus, the situation remains under control, with Ukrenergo continuing to monitor for any potential changes in cooperation with the Slovak side. The stability of Ukraine's power grid is a critical concern, especially following sustained attacks on its energy infrastructure. This incident highlights the complex interplay between energy security and international relations in the region.
This situation underscores the importance of international cooperation in the energy sector, particularly when Ukraine's energy security is critically important. Mutual support between countries, especially in the context of emergency electricity supply, can play a key role in stabilizing the energy system during crises. Ukrenergo continues to actively monitor developments and is prepared to respond to any changes in cooperation with its Slovak colleagues.
