Grant Funding for Ukrainian Railways
Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia) has secured a €54 million grant from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to drive three strategic initiatives. These projects aim to bolster energy self-sufficiency, foster an inclusive environment, and invest in human capital within the company.
- Energy Independence: A €41 million portion will be channeled into enhancing the company's energy autonomy. This includes the procurement of gas piston power plants with a combined capacity of 75 MW. The initiative is part of the broader 'Iron Efficiency' program, which seeks to modernize and upgrade the company's energy infrastructure.
- Inclusive Environment: The second component, valued at €10 million, focuses on creating an accessible workplace. At Kyiv's Central Railway Station, plans call for installing elevators and escalators on platforms two and seven. Work is already underway on platform two, aiming to improve access for all passenger categories.
- Human Capital Support: The third element, worth €3 million, is dedicated to strengthening human resources. These funds will help establish the UZ Academy, with the first training hub expected to open at a railway site in Kyiv.
Oleksiy Kuleba emphasized that 'special focus is on veteran support, inclusivity, and creating an environment where every employee has opportunities for development.'
This project was approved last year during the Rome Recovery Conference. Support comes from the EU, the UK government, and the Energy Community, reflecting international solidarity and a commitment to advancing Ukraine's railway infrastructure.
The grant represents a significant step toward modernizing and upgrading Ukrzaliznytsia's infrastructure, potentially boosting operational efficiency and passenger service quality. Investments in energy independence also underscore efforts to reduce reliance on external energy sources—a strategic priority amid current challenges. Meanwhile, the focus on inclusivity and human capital highlights the company's readiness to adapt to modern workplace needs and ensure equal opportunities for all employees.
