Warming Shelter Opens in Poland
Ukrainian Railways has established a warming shelter in Poland, positioning two specially equipped railcars at the Chełm station. This initiative was launched in January as a direct response to the ongoing station reconstruction, which began in 2024. It follows the earlier deployment of a "resilience point" in the Polish city of Chełm by the state rail operator.
Services for Passengers
Located on the station's third platform, the two carriages provide services for passengers awaiting connections to Ukraine and other destinations. Chełm station serves as a critical transit hub, with an estimated daily flow of up to three thousand people traveling to and from cities like Berlin, Warsaw, Łódź, and Poznań.
- One carriage is tailored for families with children. It features a play area, dedicated spaces for feeding and changing infants, and provides coloring books and drawing kits.
- The second carriage displays a curated selection of photographic works by Howard Buffett, the American philanthropist, photographer, and chairman of the Howard G. Buffett Foundation.
The facilities allow travelers to rest, warm up, enjoy hot tea, and recharge their mobile devices. This effort by Ukrainian Railways aims to offer comfort and support to Ukrainians in Poland during their wait for connecting services. The move highlights how rail infrastructure is being adapted to support displaced populations amid regional instability.
The opening of this warming shelter represents a significant step in supporting Ukrainian citizens temporarily abroad. This initiative not only improves waiting conditions for passengers but also demonstrates Ukrainian Railways' commitment to responding to its clients' needs under challenging circumstances.
While the renovation of Chełm station continues, the operation of such shelters helps maintain stability and provide essential social support during a difficult period.
