Ukraine's Rail Operator Announces New Restrictions
Ukraine's state railway, Ukrzaliznytsia, is implementing new security measures in response to intensified attacks on its rail infrastructure and rolling stock. Due to ongoing hostile actions targeting the transport system, train services on certain routes, particularly in the Kharkiv region, will be temporarily limited. This move reflects the severe challenges faced by critical infrastructure during the ongoing conflict.
Passengers on affected routes will be offered connecting bus services. Some long-distance direct trains will be replaced with connecting services using suburban electric trains. A special operating regime is being introduced for sections in frontline regions and areas of heightened enemy activity, including:
- Kharkiv region
- Sumy region
- Zaporizhzhia
- Kherson region
- Associated rail services
Passenger Safety as the Priority
It is important to note that unscheduled stops are possible, which may affect train punctuality. As Ukrzaliznytsia states:
"Punctuality and speed are important to us, but nothing is more important than safety."
Consequently, the new restrictions are designed to safeguard passengers and staff amid elevated risks. These measures are a direct response to the threatening situation caused by military actions on Ukrainian territory, especially near the front lines. They demonstrate the rail system's adaptation to wartime conditions, where safety takes precedence over maintaining regular schedules. While such steps significantly impact civilian mobility, their necessity is dictated by the immediate risks to passenger life and health.
