In February 2025, Yulia Vobornikova-Holovko, a skilled sniper, revealed her intention to write a book entitled Reflections of a Hardened Sniper. This marked a significant turning point in her life, as she aimed to share the raw realities and emotional toll of combat. By September 2026, Yulia had opened up in a heartfelt post about the death of her close friend known by the call sign 'Walter'.
The Loss of Walter
Walter was a 21-year-old soldier born in 2004 who went missing in action in 2025. Officially listed as missing, Yulia expressed profound sorrow over his disappearance. She wrote,
“He is still officially missing, though sadly I know the harsh truth,”revealing the depth of her grief. Walter had been instrumental in helping Yulia master a language he spoke fluently, and she described their bond as,
“he became my Kindred Spirit, and I his.”
Following Walter’s death, Yulia stepped up to lead the company named after his call sign. She vowed to retrieve his body and seek justice for his loss, declaring,
“I promised to avenge his death by destroying thousands, and I won’t rest until this debt is paid.”She also expressed gratitude for Walter’s support, emphasizing,
“He always wanted to see me as a company commander. Now I am.”
Yulia actively engaged with friends and followers on her Facebook page, gathering feedback on her plans and sharing candid thoughts about the challenges soldiers face. She candidly noted:
- “If I die, it will be clear that the deadly combination of Russian drones and poor Ukrainian command makes survival nearly impossible.”
Determined to honor Walter’s memory, Yulia hopes her upcoming book will shed light on the hardships endured by military personnel on the front lines. She poignantly added,
“When death finally comes for me, I will be smiling because my Kindred Spirit will be waiting for me at the gates to the next world.”
