How Ultra-Processed Foods May Influence Prostate Cancer Risk

Men who eat large amounts of ultra-processed foods face a 29–30% higher risk of developing prostate cancer, according to a new study by researchers at Florida Atlantic University’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine. Published in The American Journal of Medicine, the analysis drew on data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) collected between 2003 and 2023. For those in the highest consumption group, the increased risk reached 34%. The findings add to mounting evidence that the degree of food processing matters for long-term health.

Ultra-Processed Foods in the American Diet

In the United States, ultra-processed products provide roughly 60% of calories consumed by adults and about 70% of calories in children’s diets. Common examples include sugary sodas, breakfast cereals, packaged snacks, and processed meats.

The study included data on 17,024 men aged 18 and older, with food intake assessed using the NOVA classification system. Participants were grouped according to the proportion of ultra-processed foods in their diet, ranging from less than 20% of daily calories to more than 44%.

The link between high intake of these foods and higher prostate cancer risk held even after adjusting for variables such as age, race, smoking, and income. The researchers note that ultra-processed foods are typically made from refined fats, sugar, starch, salt, and synthetic additives. They also associate frequent consumption of these products with metabolic disturbances, chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and an imbalanced gut microbiome.

The researchers liken the impact of ultra-processed foods to that of smoking in the mid-20th century, underscoring the need for greater public awareness about dietary risks.

These results may inform future work in nutrition science and oncology, and they could help drive changes in how societies approach food choices.

The broader implications for public health are considerable, as these foods now make up a major share of daily energy intake in the U.S. The authors hope the evidence will encourage people to reconsider their eating habits and prompt policy changes aimed at reducing prostate cancer and other diet-related illnesses.
