How Music Helps Alleviate Pain During Medical Treatments

Listening to personally preferred music can significantly reduce pain experienced during uncomfortable medical procedures, according to research by scientists at the University Hospital of Zurich. The study involved 204 patients undergoing cannula insertion for contrast agent administration before MRI scans. Findings revealed that favorite songs were the most effective in diminishing pain sensations.

Study Design and Groups

Participants were divided into several groups, each exposed to different auditory conditions:

  • Patients’ favorite music
  • Specially designed relaxation music
  • Classical piece by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Sonata KV448)
  • Control group exposed to silence

Pain levels were measured on a scale from 1 to 10 before and after the procedure. The results showed that favorite music significantly eased pain, regardless of whether patients initially reported discomfort.

Mozart’s classical composition provided some relief, mainly benefiting those already experiencing pain beforehand. In contrast, relaxation music and silence did not show a considerable effect. Researchers noted that the slow tempo and repetitive nature of typical relaxation tracks often caused patients to tune them out. Conversely, familiar tunes engaged the nervous system and activated the body’s natural coping mechanisms.

The study authors recommend that healthcare facilities consider allowing patients to listen to their favorite music, especially for those with heightened anxiety.

This approach has the potential to improve patients’ overall experience by lowering stress and discomfort during medical interventions. The research was published on October 9 at 19:33.

These findings highlight new possibilities for pain management in clinical settings. Incorporating music therapy could enhance patient comfort and reduce reliance on pain medications, thereby minimizing the risk of drug-related side effects—an important consideration in modern healthcare.
